In Hawaii, assisted living facilities and adult residential care homes support vulnerable adults and seniors who depend on staff in an emergency. To keep residents safe, care aides in these settings are expected to be trained in first aid and CPR.

First-aid and CPR certification is a common prerequisite of the nurse-aide (CNA) programs that supply these settings and is a practically universal requirement of Hawaii care employers for assisted living and care home aide positions. Care staff are expected to be able to intervene until emergency services arrive.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate is the way to meet this expectation; it is in addition to the aide's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
