Online first aid courses

Hawaii adopts the federal OSHA first-aid standard (29 CFR 1910.151(b)) through HAR § 12-60: there is no numeric first-aider-to-worker ratio, but where no clinic or hospital is in near proximity the employer must ensure trained first-aiders and adequate supplies are available, with 'near proximity' read as a 3-4 minute response for higher-hazard sites and up to 15 minutes for low-hazard offices.

Hawaii Administrative Rules § 17-892.1-22, administered by the Department of Human Services, require at least one adult caregiver with a current pediatric first aid certificate and at least one with a current child CPR certificate present whenever children are there. The rule accepts equivalent programs and does not prohibit online or blended delivery.

Under Haw. Rev. Stat. § 663-1.5, anyone who in good faith and without expectation of pay renders emergency care at the scene of an accident or emergency is immune from liability, and separate subsections extend that immunity to AED users, acquirers and trainers. There is no legal duty to rescue, and protection is lost for gross negligence or willful misconduct.

The Hawaii Board of Nursing makes continued competency a renewal condition, with 30 contact hours per two years as one qualifying option that must be relevant to safe practice. BLS, ACLS, PALS and instructor courses cannot be applied toward those credits, so the hours must come from other eligible continuing-education activities.

In Hawaii, assisted living facilities and adult residential care homes (ARCH) are licensed by the Department of Health, and first-aid and CPR certification is a common prerequisite of the nurse-aide (CNA) programs that staff them and a near-universal requirement of care employers. A recognized, up-to-date certificate meets this expectation, in addition to the aide's occupational training, and must be renewed periodically.

Hawaii licenses resource (foster) family homes under Hawaii Administrative Rules Chapter 17-1625, administered by the Department of Human Services, Child Welfare Services, and first-aid and CPR from a recognized organization is commonly expected of caregivers as part of health-and-safety readiness. A specific statewide statute mandating it for every resource family was not clearly confirmed, so it is best verified with the licensing worker.

Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Hawaii for personal, childcare-licensing and employer purposes, with certification valid for 3 years. OSHA does not prohibit online training but recommends hands-on skills practice (OSHA 3317), and blended training with a practical skills assessment is accepted.
